FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEWCASTLE, NSW – The Tibetan Community of Newcastle is proud to announce the 14th Tibetan (Chigdril) Unity Cup, a premier national sporting and cultural event taking place from 9 to 12 April 2026. This year’s event holds special significance as it is dedicated to the “Year of Compassion” and held in honour of the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
Organised by the Tibetan Community of Newcastle, the Unity Cup provides a vibrant space for Tibetan youth to celebrate their identity, build lasting friendships, and cultivate a strong sense of belonging. The event highlights the importance of preserving Tibetan culture while empowering diaspora communities across Australia to keep their rich heritage alive.
Established in 2009, the Tibetan Unity Cup has grown into the foremost sporting platform for Tibetan youth in Australia. The 2026 tournament will draw over 160 athletes and participants aged 16 to 35 from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and the ACT, alongside hundreds of supporters from the broader community.
“The Tibetan Unity Cup is more than a tournament; it is a vital space for our youth to reconnect with their identity and build lasting bonds,” said Mr Lungtok, President of the Tibetan Community of Newcastle.
“By celebrating the values of compassion and resilience, we are empowering the next generation to carry forward a heritage of peace while actively engaging with the vibrant Australian society we call home.”
Event Highlights:
The four-day program will feature competitive basketball and soccer fixtures across two venues – Newcastle Basketball Stadium and Kurraka Reserve Soccer Field..
On 10 April 2026, the Tibetan Community of Newcastle will be holding a Fundraising Night to bring the youth together and celebrate Tibetan culture.
The following evening, a Culture Night—presented in collaboration with the Tibet Information Office as part of the Inter-Tibetan Language School Cultural Meet — will showcase traditional performances, language, and the arts.
The Tibetan community warmly invites members of the public and media to attend this celebration of culture and sport. The event provides a unique opportunity to witness the strength of the Tibetan diaspora and stand in solidarity with a resilient younger generation.
