IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Marking 28 years, the Chand Raat Eid Festival (CREF) will once again light up Sydney at the iconic Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park on Thursday 19 March from from 4 PM – 11:50 PM.
What began as a modest community event back in 1998, the festival has grown into a major cultural celebration that now draws more than 20, 000 visitors annually.
An inclusive, family-friendly event welcoming people of all backgrounds, the Chand Raat Eid Festival signifies the end of Ramadan and the eve of Eid al-Fitr in the Islamic calendar.
The name Chand Raat literally means ‘night of the Eid moon’ – a beautiful reminder of how one moment can unite communities in celebration.
Over the past 28 years, CREF has become a trusted and anticipated event on the national calendar. Its success reflects a deep respect for heritage, an embrace of diversity, and a shared joy in coming together.
At its heart, the festival follows a simple principle: “Promoting Culture, Harmony & Friendship.”
It connects people across generations, faiths, and languages while supporting local enterprise and community spirit. For many attendees, it’s not just a celebration of Eid, but a celebration of belonging – and of the Australia they call home.
From classic South Asian treats to modern festival-style offerings, the night market is a key part of the experience.
This year, visitors can enjoy diverse food stalls, dedicated kids’ attractions, community booths, henna and cultural experiences, Eid shopping and market vendors and captivating live performances and cultural entertainment throughout the evening.
Festival founder, Syed Atiq ul Hassan’s unwavering dedication to social harmony, intercultural dialogue, and civic inclusion throughout his life, laid the foundation for what is now one of the country’s most recognised and celebrated multicultural festivals.
Under his visionary leadership, CREF became much more than a festive occasion, it transformed into a powerful platform for promoting cultural understanding and inclusion, empowering youth, and strengthening community bonds across backgrounds and generations.
