Somali community organisations across Australia express concern regarding the Coalition’s proposed immigration policy that would restrict migration based on geography rather than individual assessment.
At a time when national unity is important, we believe that broad geographic restrictions may risk undermining social cohesion and unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes.
Policies that focus on nationality instead of individual circumstances may create fear and uncertainty within affected communities.
Somali Australians are proud members of Australian society. Many arrived as refugees and have contributed positively to Australia’s social, economic, and civic life for deacdes. Our community values peace, family, unity, and the rule of law.
All humanitarian entrants to Australia undergo thorough security and identity screening processes. We encourage policy discussions that remain guided by fairness, evidence, and individual assessment rather than generalised assumptions.
We respectfully call on the Coalition to engage in open and constructive dialogue with Somali communities across Australia before developing policies that directly affect our families and future.
Australia is strongest when every community feels respected, included, and treated equally under the law.
